Welcome
to the titan of domestic travel! While it isn't the
biggest on the rails, it is the most common. These containers are
used exclusively for domestic transportation and are too big to fit
on container
ships. Not only are they 3' longer than the largest international
standard containers but they are six inches wider. These containers
haul cargo that used to move in trailers on piggy back flats. By substituting
containers for trailers, the boxes can be stacked for added efficiency
on the rail part of the journey. Both railroads and many
large trucking companies replaced their "Z Van" truck trailers with
these containers in the 80's and 90's. The containers are equipped
with ISO style stacking frames at the 40 foot point. This makes it
easy for them to stack on 40 foot or 20 foot containers as well as
on top of another 48. The IBC (Inter Box Connector) points are set
so that they match up to the seagoing standards. Our
model is of the Monon sheet and post container, which features interior
bracing and an apparent smooth exterior. This also has the distinctive
"sawtooth" front around the tunnel, and the angled corner post casting
that is easy to spot on the Monons. The biggest competitor that Monon
had, Stoughton, featured square posts on the nose frame.
These container
models, like the others, are available in pairs with 2 different road
numbers. |
