One of the biggest challenges to model
railroading is accurate weathering. Our goal with this series of
cars, and other items, is to make that part of the hoby somewhat easier
to obtain. Yes, it is sometimes cool to drive your shiny new train
around. Many times, however, it is cooler to drive around a train
that looks EXACTLY like real thing. That is why
WEATHERFACTORY® cars are based on photos of the real thing.
We started this with our CORP woodchip cars, and discovered that it was
nearly impossible to get the interior welt pattern to show through on
the outside of the car using conventional techniques. So, being
the obsessive compulsive folks that we are, we used printing, paint
masks, spray guns, and anything else that was at our disposal to arrive
at a realistic, photo reflection of the weathering on specific cars.
This way, we knew it was right. As that run sold out as fast as
anything we have ever done, we thought perhaps we were on to something!
Armed with that, we set out on a new venture. Making accurate
cars that didn't look new. Of course, we are not only doing
direct photgraphed cars, but adding the proper details to cars that
were in the right kind of service. For instance, the car pictured
above is an MKT car that has been through a lot. It has been
repainted, and assigned to new service. it has recieved a new
Consolidated Stencil, and it has been in use in Cement Service for
quite some time. Well used train car, anyone? :-)
Throughout this series, we will be introducing versions of cars that
show wear and tear and look more used than our usual fare.
Hopefully, it will inspire you to get out your dry brushes and your
spray rigs and have at it. If not, just buy ours. Yes, they
are a little more expensive, but it saves you a LOT of time (especially
if we print them before dusting them in the booth!) and your time is
worth something, right?
