Following the merger of Southern Pacific and Union Pacific, as former SP cars were shopped, they usually emerged in a variation of the paint scheme seen here. Most cars have maintained the predecessor's reporting marks (even when the numbers are changed!) because of equipment trusts. These cars were leased to SP and not UP so it is easier to number the car SP than it is to amend the equipment trusts! Since UP did not have this type of wood chip gon prior to the merger, they all have SP reporting marks.
