Union Pacific, BN, and C&NW competed aggressively for the Powder River Basin coal traffic. UP's merger with C&NW made it a two horse race. While seemingly every other Class 1 railroad jumped on the Bethgon CoalPorter bandwagon, UP was a tough sell, instead relying on its large fleet of single tub gons, Thrall gons, and hoppers. Following 2 successful orders of the similar Trinity Aluminator, UP finally acquired BethGons in the year 2000. The paint scheme differs significantly from most other Bethgons with the use of color rectangles in place of full color end panels as on the DETX car below.
