Detroit Edison has a very large fleet of coal gondolas from several suppliers with reporting marks of both DEEX and DETX. Instead of relying exclusively on coal from Wyoming's Powder River Basin, Detroit Edison also brings in coal from Pennsylvania, Kentucky and other eastern US sources. By carefully blending coal from these different sources, Detroit Edison can optimize burning qualities and manage pollution control. As a result, Detroit Edison trains can be seen from Wyoming to the Mid-Atlantic states depending on the time of year and the market price for coal.
