For many years, the largest containers permitted in international trade were 40' in length. Then, one by one, countries began to allow 45' containers on their highways. American President Lines is best known to maritime fans for its fleet of ships named for American presidents and to rail fans for pioneering the "land bridge" double stack train. In the late 90's, APL split into two with the domestic container train service being taken over by Pacer Stack Train and the international business combining with Singapore based Neptune Orient Line. The NOL name has been retired in favor of APL. | |
