In
1943, the War Production Board allocated 300 of these flat cars
to Nothern Pacific. The cars, built by American Car and Foundry,
had a 50 ton capacity and were the AAR standard 53Õ6" in length.
During the war, certain design variations were implemented to save
on steel. The so called "War Emergency" variation of the AAR flat
car consisted of the use of wood floor stringers instead of steel.
Since the stringers in question are sandwiched between the frame
and the wood deck, it is virtually impossible to tell a War Emergency
flat from a post-war flat by just looking at it. Northern Pacific
had an especially large fleet of flats due to their sizable lumber
business (if you coupled all their general service flats together,
it would have made a train 18 miles long!) Many cars in this series
were later fitted with bulkheads. All NP flats were painted black
with white lettering until the year before the BN merger. This release
features 2 road numbers in the black paint scheme. This car has
a cast Brittania Pewter body from GHQ and includes an etched brass
brakewheel and staff. As with all of our flat car releases, the
NP cars come in two road numbers and are a limited numbered run
(in this case, just 350 cars of each road number produced.)
