Burlington Motor Carriers began as Burlington Northern Motor Carriers, a highway common carrier subsidiary of Burlington Northern Railroad. In the late 80s BN decided to exit the highway carrier business and concentrate on running trains. The subsidiary was sold in a leveraged buyout by a group of managers and Burlington Motor Carriers was born.
