In 1964 the FRA mandated that Roof Walks be removed from box cars in interchange service. This coincided with the banning of the practice of "riding the roof tops" for safety reasons. Railroads were given until 1974 to comply with this rule. As 40' box cars were shopped, rebuilt and repainted (often in new "merger" paint schemes) during that decade, the roof walks were removed and scrapped. Many 40' box cars, now without roof walks lasted in revenue service into the mid-80's.
Illinois Central Gulf inherited their cars from both predecessors Illinois Central and Gulf Mobile & Ohio. These cars have their con-stencils as well as ACI bar codes and U-1 wheel inspection dots. This group of cars was in interchange service but instructions to the right of the road number stated the car was to be returned to ICG when empty. Three road numbers are available on this release.
